Greek Islands Trail – Cyclades

ORGANIZATION

Social Co-operative Enterprise of Collective and Social Benefit “Paths of Greece”

PROGRAM DURATION

1 May 2024 – 30 April 2025 (12 months)

The “Greek Islands Trail – Cyclades” is a proposal to connect the best hiking trails of each island in the Cyclades into a unified hiking route. Specifically, the goal is to create a long-distance trail (estimated to be around 150-200 kilometers) that passes through all the islands of the Cyclades. This route will consist of the most “rich” in nature and culture trail of each island. By walking each section, the hiker will be able to experience the nature, biodiversity, geology, and history (both tangible and intangible), as well as have a genuine experience passing through the settlements.

  1. The planned activities include: Organizing a conference in Tinos, inviting local stakeholders and authorities. The purpose of the conference is to present the project, network with organizations, and gain support from the local community and authorities.

  2. In collaboration with local hiking groups, the top trail on each island (excluding the “Small Cyclades” in the first stage) will be identified based on nature, culture, scenic views, and difficulty level. Special emphasis will be placed on ensuring that the final routes complement each other in terms of culture, nature, and geology.

  3. A photography competition will be announced through social media and email campaigns for each trail. The top 5 photographs per trail will be used to showcase the trail on the website, with credit given to the photographers.

  4. A website will be developed for the trail, providing detailed information about each route and transportation between islands. It will serve as the primary source of information for visitors and provide them with tools to plan their visit to the trail. The website will be based on maps from Outdooractive, the world’s largest adventure tourism platform.

  5. The trail will also be promoted and shared with tour operators actively involved in hiking tourism in Greece.
