Games from generation to generation through the passage of time

ORGANIZATION

Parents & Guardians Association of the Students of the Primary School and Kindergarten of Katapola Amorgos, Cyclades Prefecture

PROGRAM DURATION

1 April 2024 – 31 March 2025 (12 months)

The main goal of the proposal is the documentation and revival of traditional games in Amorgos. The program is implemented in collaboration with the Municipality of Amorgos and includes the following stages:

  1. Research and documentation of Amorgos games, with a focus on games that have a local character, inspired by the nature and lifestyle of the people of Amorgos. For each game, a digital and printed card will be created with a description of the game and its rules. Information about the elderly who can participate in teaching and playing the games will also be archived to encourage their participation in the continuation of the program. All game cards/descriptions will be included in a comprehensive booklet that will be distributed free of charge to the students as a reference and manual for the second phase of the program.

  2. Teaching-execution and preparation of the event. The venues for teaching and performing the games will be the schools of Katapola and Aegiali, in cooperation with the Municipality of Amorgos. The process will include the categorization of the games into those aimed at children between the ages of 3-7 and those that require more skills, thus appealing to older children between the ages of 8-12. Each group of children will have the opportunity to choose a game from the available list. On the day of the meeting, Sunday morning, the elders will interact with the children and begin a supervised 4-hour lesson with 2 breaks. The program will also involve the four primary schools of Koufonisia, Donousa, Heraklia and Schoinoussa. Each school will select a group of children to learn and present a game in a special event.

  3. Presentation of the event: One month after the completion of the learning of the games, a presentation event will be held for the public with student and teacher representatives from other schools in the Cyclades and Athens. The aim is to gather at least 300 participants.

The presentation of the games will be delivered in video format, and their description will be provided in printed form. The first edition will be distributed to 200 students in Amorgos and the Small Cyclades.
